The Story of Renewable Energy in Sumba

Detikfinance, Jakarta – Since 2010 the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the National Development Planning Agency (Bappenas) and Hivos are working together to develop the Sumba Iconic Island / SII (Pulau Ikonis Energi Terbarukan) program. The program aims to provide reliable energy access to communities living on small and medium-sized islands in Indonesia, through the utilization of renewable energy.

EAST SUMBA, NTT – Passing through the green rolling roads, with magnificent scenery, accompanied by clean blue sky decorated with rolls of brilliant clouds, is a distinctive sight in the hills of Sumba. One of the distinctive features, there is no view of power lines along the hill roads. Because there is clearly no power grid in sight. However, this lack of electricity seems to be partially solved. Lulundilu Village, Mahu Subdistrict, East Sumba Regency, is one such example. The existence of an Energy Kiosk in the village has helped the villagers coming out of the darkness and communication issues.

‘Sumba Iconic Island’ to Accelerate 100% Renewable Energy

TAMBOLAKA, SOUTHWEST SUMBA, NTT – The Sumba Iconic Island (SII) program  holds out a gathering for two days on 10-11 April 2017, with stakeholders resumed the Coordination Meeting at the Sinar Tambolaka Hotel,  Southwest Sumba Regency, East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), involving the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, the Provincial Government of East Nusa Tenggara and the District Governments of Sumba Island and Sumba NGOs.

GOI-Dutch Government Support Sumba Iconic Island

HIVOS, JAKARTA – The Government of Indonesia (GOI) and the Dutch government have signed a Letter of Support for the sustainability of new and renewable energy for the Sumba Iconic Island programme. The Letter of Support for Sumba, signed by the Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation, Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Rida Mulyana, and the Ambassador of the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands to Indonesia Rob Swartbol in Jakarta, March 1, 2017. On the signing day, the Director General  is represented by Maritje Hutapea.

Investors sought for green energy projects on Sumba Island

The government has invited investors and financial firms to build power plants powered by renewable energy in trying to meet the 2020 electrification deadline on Sumba Island in East Nusa Tenggara (NTT).

Energy sources for the power plants for the Sumba Iconic Island (SII) project include solar, wind, hydro and biomass.
